PRESS RELEASE
Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf is presenting new works by Beat Streuli entitled Krakow October 05. Having been shot in Krakow, the works continue the photographic way of the artist. At the core of the subject matter lies the society of the photographed individual rather than the individual himself or herself: the human in public space. Streuli selects random micro incidents from everyday ongoings and focusses on the relations of urban humans - contacts, conversations, looks as well as survey, evasion, and passing.
By his approach, to be localized within street photography, Beat Streuli focusses on certain people without being noticed and accentuates the individual in front of the backdrop of the busy street. This detail extract rather characterizes these persons than isolating them. By sectioning and contrasting, by sharpening the foreground and blurring the background, Streuli counts on visual intensification, which is exactly what creates the tension of perspective and composition. Mood and atmosphere as central motifs of the works Streuli combines with the conscious use of known experiences. The protagonists are being presented in image formats that evoke expectations of seduction and manipulation by their closeness to commercials and movies.
Entirely following the style of his contemporary societal portraits that came into being in various cities around the world, Beat Streuli communicates a complex image of global urban societies by precisely portraying their peoples' realities and multi-layeredness.
