Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf presents Martin Kozlowski - Forecast, the Swedish artist's second solo exhibition at the gallery, featuring a group of new photographic works. What began as a playful moment within Martin Kozlowski's artistic working process developed into a profound exploration of the means and possibilities of image making - from an interplay of light, form and composition, works emerge that display an extraordinary intensity of color and vibrancy.
The origin of this group of works can be traced back to the supposedly everyday process of mixing paint for his paintings. Utilizing the mixing container as a canvas, Martin Kozlowski began to apply, shift, and superimpose different colors. The interaction of light and shadow created a textured, almost sculptural depth that inevitably flattened out after a short time. The working process of mixing and merging the different shades of color are captured through the medium of photography; while at the same time, the motifs of the final works suggest dynamic movements.
Paying particular attention to the spatiality of the surface, which varied by up to two centimeters, the abstract-looking compositions were captured photographically and then increased in scale. Furthermore, the artist utilizes the digital possibilities of image processing to adjust, manipulate and refine the color composition. The interplay between a painting approach and digital image composition provides a bridge back to Martin Kozlowski’s artistic origins in the medium of painting.
Martin Kozlowski (*1984) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. He studied at Goldsmiths University in London and completed his studies at the Städelschule as a master student of Amy Sillman. Works of the artist have been exhibited in Stockholm, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Palma and Tokyo, amongst other places. Martin Kozlowski is a laureate of the Vera and Göran Agnekils Stipend of the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm.
